If your Christmas or holiday plans include traveling by road or plane, you are no doubt leaving your home vulnerable to theft. While your homeowner’s insurance policy would cover theft this is not the mess you want to return following the holidays.
Here are some simple tips to keep your home secure and safe while traveling during the holiday season:
Let your neighbors know your plans. Leave a contact number and ask neighbors that will be home to keep an eye out for suspicious activity and any packages that might arrive while you are gone.
Invest in timers. The lights are on which means that somebody must be home. Purchase a few timers at your local hardware store and set them to go off in the evenings. Choose a few lamps throughout your home and near windows.
Keep your travel plans off social media. It’s always tempting to post fun photos of your travels and adventures but by doing so you are also signaling that your home might be empty.
Install a Ring camera or a security system. Cameras such as Ring have proven to be a deterrent to would-be thieves. Additionally, a security system is also a good way to lower your homeowner’s insurance policy as well just be sure to let your agent know you have one!
Christmas lights. It’s best to avoid keeping your Christmas lights on when you are not home. House fires spike in the month of December and the culprit is often worn or damaged lighting. Check out this handy guide on Christmas light safety tips.
